Week 5- Project

Workshop project progress
  • Red: I havent made the appendix #1
-Participants will be asked to use the information from appendix #1 to find something they have in common with other participants.
  • Yellow: The activity when participants show how much they know about Scratch, They all ready know about it so I think I need to increase the expectation
Scratch basics Review Activity:
 *How to snap blocks together
*How to make a sprite move and say something
 *How to add another character
*How to change the background image

  • Green: the element that i'm excited about it are: the benefitis of the two days workshop and woorking with makeymakey board

Project

Goal: To train Computer Lab and Special Education teachers to deepen their skills of the computer programs "Scratch" and "Makey-Makey" to support learning for all students through technology.

2 Day Workshop

First Day

Unit #1
Meet and greet:
-Participants will be asked to use the information from appendix #1 to find something they have in common with other participants.
-Participants will create their own name tag.
-Participants will use post-it notes to write down two strengths and two weaknesses. The post-it notes will then be displayed on a wall and used again during the last section of this training.

Unit #2
-Scratch basics Review Activity:
 *How to snap blocks together
*How to make a sprite move and say something
 *How to add another character
*How to change the background image
Participants will create a project using eight blocks to tell about their place of work. To establish a target of what is expected, the participants will be provided with two examples.

Unit #3
-Participants will practice using a combination of keys on the keyboard to command actions in Scratch
-Makey-Makey Introduction:
Participants will be allotted time to interact with the program and better their understanding of the conduction of electricity.
Practice #1: create a piano.
Practice #2: create a tablet to introduce the vowels.

Unit #4
-Each participant will be asked to create an account with Scratch Ed. and will need to upload both projects.
-While in the Scratch program, each participant will then need to create a 'Studio' and name it 'Makey-Makey'.

Second Day

Unit #5
Main Project
-Participants will be paired up to include one Computer Lab teacher and one Special Education Teacher.
-The pair will be asked to pick a specific theme or unit of study and a specific learning/physical disability.
-Based on the specific unit of study and disability, the participants will be asked to design a tool to support learning for the students.
-Participants will be asked to present their projects to the rest of the group.
-Participants will be asked to upload their finished projects onto their Studio.

Unit #6
-Q&A: Participants will be given time to ask any further questions.
-Closure/Reflection: Post-it activity. Participants will be asked to reflect back on their strengths and weaknesses and how these influenced their ability to create the projects and work with others and what they did to help themselves or others overcome any problems.
-Workshop Evaluation

  1. Hello Suhany,

I was drawn to your post because my son and his family live in Ecuador! I think your plan is interesting as it helps teachers to think about how people learn. I can imagine offering this to classroom teachers after you have piloted it with the Computer Lab and Special Ed teachers.

Would you consider building in more opportunity for discussion about how the participants learn, rather than just revisiting their sticky notes in unit 6?

For your Yellow concern (unit 2 activity), perhaps create varying sets of 8 blocks so that people with varying levels of Scratch experience can choose a set that works for them. Some people might want to take it easy, others might want to challenge themselves.

I appreciated reading through the guided activities in units 1, 2 & 3, as they are concrete. I am interested in knowing what participants do in unit 5 and hope that you can publicize their work (perhaps in a Studio you curate?)

    Cheers, Laurie

  2. Hi Suhany,

What a lovely project! This fits very nicely into the scope and spirit of what we were hoping CCOW participants would design for their independent study project! -- and it seems like you've made great progress so far.

It's so nice that you have two days for the workshop. Time for professional development is such a luxury these days, so it's great that the participants will have lots of time to play and dive deeper with Scratch and MaKey MaKey, and it's a great opportunity for you to have a second day to iterate on anything unexpected that came up in Day 1 and use Day 2 to especially cater to students' needs.

I love that you have the participants create their own name tags as an introductory activity. It's a very simple activity, but it gets people making, creating, and tinkering from the start and is a nice way to set the tone of the workshop.

I think Laurie has a nice suggestion for addressing your Yellow. Also, one thing I wondered was how the participants are being paired for the Unit #5 Main Project activity. Do they choose their partner? Is this someone they work with or will be working with when they return to their schools? I've found in previous workshops that it helps when teachers know someone else at their school who also uses Scratch. It can help with collaboration and garnering enthusiasm and energy around creative computing. Depending on your goals and audience, it might also be nice to include in your reflection activity at the end some time to brainstorm how they might practically bring these types of activities to their students. In my experience, workshop attendees enjoyed leaving the event with a concrete plan or vision for how they might use this in their classrooms.

Looking forward to seeing how your workshop plans progress! Please let me know if you have any questions about anything I've mentioned.

    Sincerely,
    Michelle, from the CCOW Team

PS: This workshop plan would make an excellent resource for ScratchEd! Perhaps you might consider posting the final design?
